Installation

nac is published on PyPI as nac-cli, the command it installs is nac. The recommended way to install it is with uv, which nac also uses to run nac-validate and nac-test:

uv tool install nac-cli

A specific version can be installed with uv tool install nac-cli==0.1.0. To upgrade or uninstall nac:

uv tool upgrade nac-cli
uv tool uninstall nac-cli

Caution

Don’t use pip install nac or uvx nac. The nac package on PyPI is a different, unrelated package.

Prerequisites

• uv: nac uses it to run nac-validate and nac-test, which therefore don’t have to be installed separately. It is only optional if both are already installed locally in versions that satisfy their constraints (see Tool Versions).
• terraform or tofu on the PATH: if neither is installed, nac setup can download OpenTofu (see Tool Versions).
• tenv: only required if a specific Terraform or OpenTofu version is pinned with tools.terraform.version in nac.yaml.

nac setup verifies these prerequisites, as well as the environment variables listed in nac.yaml:
