Global interface settings define device-wide defaults and behavior that apply across interfaces on NX-OS devices. They include Ethernet defaults for switchport mode, shutdown behavior, unsupported transceiver support, multicast storm control, native VLAN tagging, link-status syslog levels and interface syslog info, as well as port-channel load-balancing hash parameters, port-channel fast convergence, SVI autostate behavior, interface breakout maps for high-density ports, and errdisable detection and automatic recovery, which control which error conditions, such as link flap, BPDU guard, storm control or UDLD, place an interface into the error-disabled state and how it recovers.
ethernet.default_switchport (system default switchport) also sets the layer of interfaces.ethernets and interfaces.port_channels entries that do not set switchport.enabled. With layer3, these interfaces are configured as routed interfaces (no switchport), receive their IPv4 and IPv6 configuration, and their spanning-tree and VTP settings are skipped. Set switchport.enabled to override the default per interface. When feature vtp is enabled, NX-OS 10.5(6) rejects no system default switchport while any Layer 3 interface exists.
